1. Is It Safe To Drink From Copper Cups?
Yes! It is 100% safe to drink from copper cups. However, only cups made from PURE copper will give you the health benefits from copper water. Copper-plated cups are not the same as pure copper cups. As explained in our guide, Moscow Mules have been traditionally served in copper cups due to its conductivity. Serving chilled drinks in copper makes the drink even colder due to copper's reactivity to temperature.
3. What Does Copper Cups Do To Water?
Copper has a unique oligodynamic effect to enteric bacteria present in water. The copper ions inactivate and destroy bacteria by affecting the protein in the bacteria's cell walls. This inadvertently causes membrane damage in bacteria, therefore impeding its growth and multiplication.
In fact, a recent study published in the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition examined the effects of storing microbially contaminated drinking water in a copper vessel. The research specifically looked at harmful bacteria, including E. coli and Salmonella, and investigated whether copper could help reduce microbial contamination in stored water.
After the contaminated water was stored in copper pots for up to 16 hours at room temperature, researchers found that:
- No bacteria could be recovered from the stored water
- The pH of the water increased, making it more alkaline
- Alkaline water has been associated with a range of potential health benefits
These findings are supported by research into the use of copper vessels for water disinfection. In another study, researchers concluded that water could be safely stored in a copper vessel for 12 to 24 hours to help disinfect harvested rainwater containing coliform bacteria, a group of microorganisms that can indicate bacterial contamination.
Long story short, copper has an antibacterial and antimicrobial effect on water stored for 12 to 24 hours, making your daily drinking water safer. At the same time, drinking copper water daily also gives you plenty of health benefits, including better immunity, improved digestion, balanced thyroid function etc.

4. How To Wash Copper Cups and Other Copper Drinkware?
