What Is A Double-Sided Jigger?

Having an accurate bar measurement tool such as a double-sided jigger is vital to mixing delicious esoteric cocktails.

So what is a double-sided cocktail jigger?

In a nutshell, a double-sided jigger is an alcohol measuring cup that is a staple for professional bartenders. This measuring cup ranges in sizes of 0.5 to 2.5 oz, and usually has inner markings or lines for ease of use.

Double-sided jiggers are usually made of one larger cup and another smaller cup soldered on into one. This dual-sided design gives bartenders the advantage of mixing multiple drinks quickly, which is also useful for home bartenders entertaining a large group of people.

According to Diageo Bar Academy, the origins of the term "jigger" have been the subject of much speculation, with theories ranging from the rum ration given to British Navy sailors to a playful spin on the word "thingamajig." But regardless of its murky past, the jigger has unquestionably become an essential tool for all bartenders.

By the late 1800s, metal jiggers had ousted sherry glasses as the preferred way to measure spirits. And in a stroke of genius, Cornelius Dungan of Chicago patented the now-famous double-sided design in 1893, revolutionizing the bartending game and earning the jigger a spot as every mixologist's best friend.

"Jigger" is more than just the name for this essential bar tool. In fact, jigger can also be used as a unit of measurement in cocktail recipes. One jigger shot usually equates to 1.5 oz of alcohol or liquor to pour, however, there are several different sizes of jiggers. It's important to understand the various sizes of jiggers when following cocktail recipes.

Which Side Of A Double-Sided Jigger Do You Use?

You can use either side of a double-sided jigger. It really depends on the amount and type of liquor you would like to measure, as well as your cocktail mixing skills. If you have a really steady hand, you can use the smaller cup on a double-sided jigger. As a beginner, you have more of a margin of error if you use the larger cup to factor in some spillage.

Here's how you use a double-sided jigger:

1. Know your jigger's fluid capacity and inner markings: Before you start pouring, make sure you are clear about the fluid capacity of the larger and smaller sides of your jigger.

2. Select the correct side of your jigger: Have the desired measurement side facing upwards.

3. Pour the liquor: Hold your double-sided jigger above your mixing vessel or cocktail shaker. Pour the liquid until it reaches the brim or until you reach the punch mark of your desired liquid capacity.

4. Add to your drink: Invert the jigger to empty its contents into your drink. Make sure you use a steady hand and pour slowly, especially with smaller measurements.
