Did the roman's understand the consequences of lead in their water supply? Do we understand the consequences of Fluoride in our modern water supply? 67% of homes in the U.S. receive water that has been fluoridated, according to this article. The EPA permits up to 4 ppm (parts per million per liter) of water and allows that concentrations higher than that are harmful to human health. The US Department of Health and Human services recommends levels no higher than 0.7 ppm.
There is a lot of conflicting information out there and we'll present to you in this article both sides of the scientific arguments. While fluoride has been proven to strengthen teeth and reduce cavities (as does good dental hygiene practices), it also has been shown to have some very harmful health and cognitive consequences. We'll go over the benefits and dangers here below in this article.

Is Fluoridated Water Safe For Consumption? Why should you remove fluoride from water?
The short answer is no. It is not safe to consume fluoridated water for long periods of time. Studies have shown it linked to some alarming impacts on our adult and infant health, not dissimilar to the lead contamination that impacted the ancient roman empire.
Authorities including the Department of Health and Human Services(DHHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) have set guidelines for safe levels of fluoride in drinking water to prevent tooth decay. DHHS set the optimal level of fluoride at 0.7 ppm or 0.7 milligrams(mg) in every litre of water. On the other hand, the EPA sets the maximum allowable level of fluoride at 4ppm. This allowable limit is already significantly higher than what the WHO recommends.
The World Health Organization(WHO) notes that continuous exposure to drinking water that contains fluoride of more than a safe level of 1.5ppm could lead to health hazards. In short, excess exposure or intake of fluoride in drinking water can prove detrimental to public health.
Fluoride causes bones to become brittle, thyroid issues such as hyperthyroidism and dental fluorosis(changes in tooth enamel).
This study also proves that long-term exposure to fluoride causes skeletal fluorosis(weakening the skeleton and altering tissue’s structure). Most worrying is its effects on the human brain. Preliminary research in laboratory animals suggests high levels of fluoride may be toxic to nerve cells, and even impact learning, memory and cognition deficits.
Current research is showing in the vast majority of human studies examining the effects of fluoride in pregnancy, fluoride is passing through the mother's placenta into the fetus' brain and reducing IQ. The National Institute of Health recently published a report is confirming these studies.
What Is Fluoride? Why is Fluoride Found In Drinking Water?
So, what exactly is fluoride? Fluoride is commonly found in household items such as toothpaste to protect teeth from the bacteria in plaque. It has been added to public water systems for the past 70 years as it was believed by scientists to prevent tooth decay.
From the early 20th century, scientists linked high levels of naturally occurring fluoride in certain communities to low levels of tooth decay.
Today, the American Dental Association(ADA) continues to advocate for fluoridation, as they argue that fluoride is beneficial for preventing tooth decay. In fact, the first use of fluoridation of community water in United States was in 1945. Grand Rapids, Michigan became the first community in the world to add fluoride to their tap water.
Subsequent studies showed a significantly low levels of cavities in school children, this practice spread to other towns and cities. The CDC (Center of Disease Control and Prevention) also named community water fluoridation one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.
