Did you know that a recent study by the U.S. Geological Survey found that up to 45% of tap water in the country contains potentially harmful chemicals called per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances, or PFAS also know as Forever Chemicals?
And with over 12,000 types of PFAS, it's nearly impossible to test for all of them. The study only looked for 32 types, leaving many others undetected. As a concerned parent, it's important to be aware of the potential risks associated with tap water and take steps to ensure your family's safety.
Are PFAs regulated by the EPA in the United States?
But does the EPA(Environmental Protection Agency) regulate these PFAs in our tap water? The short answer is yes.
On April 10, 2024, the EPA made a new rule about drinking water. The rule is called the National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) and it is about six different chemicals called PFAS.
Before making the rule, the EPA looked at over 120,000 comments from people and talked to others who know about the rule. They also talked to people before and after making the rule.
The EPA thinks that by following this rule for many years, around 100 million people won't be exposed to PFAS in their drinking water. This will save thousands of lives and prevent tens of thousands of serious illnesses caused by PFAS. An increasing number of studies have found that PFAs are associated with the following health risks, such as increased risks of certain cancers, reduced immune function and even developmental delays in children. Similarly, fluoride in unfiltered tap water also poses health risks including reduced IQ in children.
That being said, is your unfiltered tap water really safe for daily consumption?
How does PFAs or Forever Chemicals impact your health?
According to this article, PFAs have the potential to pose the following health risks:
- Lower birth weight in babies
- Reduced kidney function
- Increased uric acid and cholesterol levels in the blood
- Altered levels of hormones, including thyroid and sex hormones
- Earlier menopause and later age for starting menstruations
The EPA also included the following known health effects of PFAs from current peer-reviewed studies:
- Developmental effects or delays in children, including behavioral changes, bone variations and accelerated puberty
- Reduced immune system function, including reduced vaccine response
- Increased risk of cancers, including kidney, prostate and testicular caners
As you can see, there are various harmful impacts when it comes to long-term exposure to Forever Chemicals. Note that these are the current understanding and known effects by the EPA, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The staggering amount of negative health effects that are currently know are already quite concerning!
